Surgical Oncology
Surgical oncology involves treatment of cancer with a surgical procedure in which a surgeon removes the cancer from the patient’s body. The surgical oncology department has a team of qualified and trained surgical oncologists, each specialized for every part / system of the body that is prone to cancer, like uro-oncologist, breast oncologist, gastro-oncologist etc. All types of cancer surgeries are done as per international standard in the state-of-art operation theatres. The surgical team is backed by a well equipped postoperative intensive care unit for smooth recovery of all patients. The surgeons have a close liaison with the medical and radiation oncology department and work as a team. The patient and family members benefit from a strong social support group of volunteers attached to this institute.
Types of Surgery:
- Open Surgery:
Open surgery is the regular surgery were in a regular incision is done at the site of operation and the procedure is carried out.
- Key Hole Surgery (MIS):
Minimally invasive surgery limits the size of surgical incisions needed so that the blood loss, wound healing time, associated pain and scarring, hospitalization time, risk of infection, and postsurgical complications are usually much less.
Imaging techniques like arthroscopic or laparoscopic techniques and radiologists, surgeons are able to diagnose, identify internal features, and perform surgical procedures with very small incisions. - Robotic Surgery: Surgeries that would require cutting open of the areas too are treated with key hole surgeries using Robotic System. The common surgeries include, surgeries of GI tract, head and neck, gynec, prostrate, appendix.
